Questions
Is it really free?
Yes. The work happens on your own computer, so there’s nothing to pay per image — no credits, no watermarks, and full-resolution downloads are included.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
Not to any third party. With the local server running, images go only to that server on your own machine; without it, they’re processed inside your browser tab. Your recent images are kept in your browser so you can come back to them, and you can delete them at any time in My images.
Which AI model is used?
With the local server running, a two-stage pipeline on your GPU: BiRefNet finds the subject, then ViTMatte works out true transparency along the edges, so hair, fur and whiskers come out as fine strands instead of a hard outline (about 2–4 seconds per image on an Apple Silicon Mac). Without the server, RMBG-1.4 runs in your browser instead — quicker to start, but less accurate. Either way, edge colours are cleaned so there are no halos on new backgrounds.
Which formats are supported?
Anything your browser can open: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF and SVG in most browsers. Downloads are available as transparent PNG or WebP, or JPG with a white fill.
What’s the maximum resolution?
Images up to 4096 px on the long side are processed at full size; larger images are scaled down to that. Crops with padding or wider aspect ratios can export up to 8000 px.
The result isn’t perfect. What can I do?
Open Erase / Restore and paint over the areas that need fixing. Turn on “Show original faintly” to see what can be brought back. Undo and redo work with Ctrl/⌘ + Z.
Can I use it commercially?
The app code is yours. BiRefNet is MIT-licensed and ViTMatte is Apache-2.0. The in-browser fallback, RMBG-1.4, is licensed by BRIA AI for non-commercial use only — keep the local server running for commercial work.
